Frequently asked questions

Q. When trying to install the application I get access denied errors.
A. As with all Windows software you should be logged in as an administrator to install the software. The reason for this is that the application is installed into the Microsoft recommended location: "c:\program files", but to write to this area you must be more than a normal user.
Q. My dates appear backwards, or in American format
A. That's most likely because your computer thinks it's in America! There are options in Windows called "Regional Settings" that control things like the date and currency formats - you should make sure that this is set to UK for the correct formats to apply.
Q. When I print the pages go onto multiple sheets, some of which are blank
A. We have designed the reports in SimplyFactFind to fit onto A4 paper. It is quite common to come across printers that have incorrectly been setup to use Letter paper size (the American default) and this will cause the prints to go onto multiple pages.
Q. What is the minimum specification PC for running SimplyFactFind?
A. We support all current Microsoft operating systems and have tested on many of the legacy ones as well. We would suggest a minimum of a Pentium II processor and 64MB RAM, but a recommended configuration would be a Pentium III and 128MB memory. The faster the machine the quicker the user interface will perform.

SimplyFactFind requires the Microsoft .Net Framework 1.1, which in turn requires Internet Explorer 5.0 or greater so this will need to be installed on any early (pre 2000) operating systems.

We have users running on Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows Me. We have also got users running on Windows NT 4 workstation but please see some of the FAQ's further down to ensure that the machine is up-to-date before attempting to install and run SimplyFactFind.
Q. Does SimplyFactFind run on Linux?
A. We don't current support Linux but if enough interest was expressed we would consider running SimplyFactFind under Mono. Please contact us if you are interested in this option.
Q. How should I backup my files?

A. SimplyFactFind uses its own file format based upon an XML structure. These files can be copied to CDROM or to any other backup media. The files are not locked when in use to enable networked backups.

In a small network environment we would recommend using offline folders to keep a copy of your fact find documents on your server and a local copy on your workstation/laptop.

Q. I've installed the application as an administrator but now the users can't see the application in their start menu.

A. During the installation you are prompted as to whether you want to install for the current user or for all users. The most likely cause of the above is that the installer chose the current user not all users.

The easiest way to resolve this is to either re-install the application (no settings will be lost) or to login as an administrator and copy the shortcut files from "c:\documents and settings\administrator\desktop\simplyfactfind.lnk" to "c:\documents and settings\all users\desktop\" and from "c:\documents and settings\administrator\start menu\programs\gatique" to "c:\documents and settings\all users\start menu\programs\"

Q. On Windows NT I get an error message when running the application stating that that an "Exception has been thrown by the target of an invocation".
A. We use 128bit security within our application and rely on the encryption routines supplied by Microsoft. Early editions of their software were supplied with 56bit encryption until the US government allowed Microsoft to introduce the much stronger 128bit routines.

It is quite possible if you are using Windows NT that you've not yet upgraded to the 128bit security. This can be done by going to Windows update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) and downloading either Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a (128bit) or the Internet Explorer High Encryption Pack. The latter is the quickest to download, but depending on whether your machine is up-to-date with patches you may need to install the full Windows NT service pack which could take several hours over a slow Internet connection.
